Teacher Evaluation Form

Your teacher is being evaluated. The Dean of the college and others in the administration  want to decide whether he (she) should be given a merit raise or whether he (she) should be replaced by a new teacher. We would like your help. Although many factors will be taken into account in the final decision, we want your input on one of these. We want to know whether, in relation to other similar teachers, your teacher has caused you to learn more or less.

We recognize that learning can occur in a variety of ways. At one extreme, the teacher's recommendations, assignments or requirements may cause a great deal of learning to occur even though his (her) lectures or help sessions are insignificant. At the other extreme, a teacher may present entertaining lectures in the classroom, but because the assignments or requirements are easy, he (she) may cause only a little learning to occur. Please pay attention to all of the ways that a teacher may have caused you to learn.

It is natural for students to favor teachers who have treated them well, regardless of the amount of learning that has occurred. Unfortunately, it is also natural for students to disfavor teachers who they believe have treated them badly or unfairly. Please recognize that the results of this evaluation are important for the future academic reputation of the college. If you rate a teacher highly merely because he (she) has given you easy assignments, given you a high grade, or done you a favor; we will not be able to make an adequate assessment of his (her) contribution to learning. We may make the mistake of rewarding a "bad" teacher and punishing a "good" one. The same is true if you rate the teacher low because you do not like him (her). This evaluation is not a popularity contest.

In making your evaluation, we hope that you will take account of the fact that some courses are naturally more interesting or appealing than others. This may be because of the subject matter (e.g., statistics vs. contemporary issues). We hope that you will try to compare the learning caused by your teacher with the learning caused by other teachers in similar courses.

Taking these things into account, we would like you to compare this instructor with others you have had and are having. As a starting point, we would like you to give him (her) a ranking between 1 and 9. We assume that the typical, or average, AUS teacher deserves a ranking of 5. So if you think that your teacher is worse than average in causing you to learn, you should assign a number below 5. If he (she) is better than average, you should assign a number above 5. The teacher who has caused you to learn the most would be assigned a 9; and the teacher who has caused you to learn the least would be assigned a 1.

Please do not treat this task casually. Give it some thought because your answer may effect the education of students at AUS for years to come. Besides this, it will effect the college's academic reputation. We are sure that you realize how important these factors are.

Now that you have given your teacher a numerical ranking, we would like to know your reasoning. Please tell below which characteristics of the teacher led you to choose the number you did.

Since your comments will also be helpful to your teacher, we would like him (her) to see them. If you prefer that he (she) not read them please indicate this to us and we shall omit your comments from the set we return to him (her).

If you do not want your teacher to see your remarks, please write no.____

STUDENT COMMENTS

1.      I choose number 8 because my  teacher helped me to learn in another way by depending on myself.  I have learned the reality of not being spoon feed but search for the knowledge through reading on my own and asking from those who know where I did not understand.  This prepares me for the coming course which will require much of my personal time.  Thank you.

  1. There aren’t actually any particular comments that I would like to make, but I think that in the learning process not everything depends on the student.  The professor as well must put maximum effort to it.  You say above to rank the professor not in terms of how good he was to the student.  I think there will be no student  will even care about getting knowledge from the professor that treats him badly.  The professor should treat the weak students much better, because it will give them a stimulus to get their knowledge from that professor.  And thanks for professor Gunning, I think I did gain knowledge from this course, at least something.

  1. The level of students is still not as high as the professors want it to be because it still is the beginning of our learning.  The professor expects too much out of us and should be a little more reasonable and understanding when it comes to grading.  Being a little more illustrative and explanatory in teaching will also help.

  1. Many will consider him to be the most harsh professor in this college and I am certainly one of them but it in the simple most reason for me to be able to learn something from this course. Although he is much harsher than when his grading scheme is very good which motivated me to study hard.  However, most of the classes ended up being a discussion rather than teaching due to which I give an 8 because I feel he should teach a bit more.  I would then define him as a person who is strict but motivating and rewarding and one of the few person who gives a student what he deserves which is very important for a student to feel that his/her effort here been rewarded.

  1. I think that the style of the teacher is pretty different, and quite effective, for me at least; If you would by your own, and you are self determined, you can do any course with any teacher, and I don’t think that the teacher is a major factor in the learning process. I think he’s more like a helpful tool, which help you to understand the most difficult topics and concepts and I think that the teacher is quite good of it.

  1. I found the text inadequate which is one of the main reasons for my dissatisfaction.  I would have preferred a better textbook.  I would also have liked the course of learning outside classroom was encouraged instead of in class lectures and learning that was followed throughout the semester.

  1. During class, the lectures were somewhat helpful in the beginning, but as the semester progressed, the teaching methods improved and I learned a lot more.  Even though we were not given any mandatory assignments, the end of chapter questions which we were told to do for our own benefit were extremely helpful in understanding the material and allowed me to learn a lot.

  1. The lectures are interesting, although one and half hour is a little bit to long.  In general, assignments were very helpful in understanding material.

  1. He is a good teacher in AUS.  He understands what exactly I need.  He is very co-operative with all students in the class or out the class.  His way of teaching is good and he knows how to make the materials easy and smoothly.

  1. No comment!

  1. The professor is always looking forward to questions asked by students and that’s very good because it motivates him to provide more detailed examples and clues, everything with DR. Gunning is fair.

  1. The way he teaches is really helpful.  I believe and helped me a lot to understand this course.  The materials he uses is supported and all available in the book which means that you are really familiar to your book and you can study easily rather than those teachers who never use course books and give notes that are not related to the book for course they have chosen.  In general, I love the way the teacher and I know that many students don’t like him maybe because he is really serious grading and teaching in the class.  And another thing.  I think one of the ways that shows he knows what he does is putting grades on curve and compare them together so he can give kind grades fairly and depend upon the level of the whole class.

  1. Giving freedom and helping is self-study.   Giving examples from his own life and experience.

  1. First of all every teacher like to help his student not only to understand the subject, but to pass the course. In this class the teacher is just giving lectures and its without attendance and that at least should worth 15% of the total grade.  And also he didn’t give us any quizzes or make up exams and I think that he is just want to count our grade in the first, second and the final just that without doing any other works.  I hope that if his going to teach in other courses, he should make quizzes and attendance at least.

  1. He has a different approach towards teaching.  And I believe this way of teaching leads to a more mature students.  Why?  Because, when nobody is forcing you to do something, at one stage  like that person would realize that, he or she has to work.  Otherwise they won’t have any place in this ----------.  And  if its otherway round, then most of the time students try to look for excuse or adopt negative paths.  Thanks.

  1. Well, I think that Prof. Gunning masters the subject very well, but I think his policy of no assignments, that help fall for students to post their grade, needs revising.

  1. The grading scheme should not all be on the midterms and final exam. There should be some marks on attendance.  There should also be assignments and quizzes every week to help as learn quicker and to also encourage us to study more. They should also have some marks that should affect the final grade.

  1. It would be better to have quizzes distributed throughout the course to make sure that students, are on track..

  1. First of all the books ( Mankiw’s) was great compared with other teachers books.  Self-reliant learning was the main target for the teacher. Learning would be more attractive if there was an assignment worth 10% of the final grade.

  1. Dr. Gunning is a very good teacher (explains very clearly always ready to answer questions) whose grading system is very different from all teachers.  It gives students a chance to be more independent that means even if you don’t attend class.  You can do the studying on your own without losing day of the grades of the course.  Personally, I enjoyed his course and come with something out of it.

  1. Too much details and information for much higher-level students.

  1. I chose this number for the teacher as far as class room interaction and going to his office for help did make me learn but another aspect is that I would have learnt a lot more if I had take prerequisite courses that would has simplified the course for me.  As for as the teacher is concerned I feel that he honestly did do what was expected but would have been better if he had interacted a bit more.  The text within was very good and interesting.  The teacher was ready to help always and shows his knowledge helped me learn his method might not be what most are used to but it seems good enough for us to gain the knowledge needed.  I was satisfied.

  1. Though most of his teaching to aimed at higher-level students, his book is clearly written and he was always ready to answers questions, though the material for the final was quiet in excess.

  1. The only problem is ECO/PBA 294 was the unusual way of studying that I as a less advanced student (still Freshman) found difficult.  The grade (7) is because the professor tried his best to  help accomplish the goals of this course.  The language in the book is hard because this was my first advanced course.

  1. I generally found the course to be challenging, I would have preferred in outside class learning was emphasized by giving projects, field trips etc.  This would help in making the course more interesting stimulating and fun to learn.
