From: ICE Date: Sun, 01 Oct 2000 15:42:28 +0000 Subject: Re: John Pitner Legal Defense Fund - Update ... Questions Sir, Thank you for your message. I can assure you there is a John Pitner in the Sea-Tac Federal Detention Center. You can read his story at http://www.zianet.com/wblase/endtimes/pitner.htm. You can contact Terry Anderson "Terry Anderson" , a Seattle area fellow who initiated the efforts with "Louis", for more detailed information. It is understandable that you would find it hard to believe that a "real attorney" cannot be found to take John Pitner's case on principle alone. I have been at this stuff over ten years, and I can only tell you that I have seen this time and again. "Real attorneys" are, for the most part, completely unwilling to offend, might less attack, the "system" that pays them so handsomely and provides their sense of power and importance. In my experience "attorneys" will not touch "politically incorrect" cases such as John Pitner's with a ten-foot pole, perhaps because 1) they know that when the gov't has a vested political interest in the case, the opposition has little if any chance of winning, and 2) political prisoners rarely can afford to pay. There are 560+ folks on the ICE list. It is difficult to believe that each of them would not have the time and resources to mail a five-dollar bill to John's defense fund. Why they didn't? Skepticism? Cynicism? Hopelessness? Indifference? I don't know. I personally sent a good deal more than $5, even though experience tells me that "Louis" has a slim chance of freeing John Pitner. What I sent was, at best, a pitifully small attempt to lend support to an effort at resisting gov't tyranny and also to hopefully buoy up John Pitner's spirits -- so he would know that some folks are at least making some attempts to help him Thank you for caring. There are so many fronts to fight on, so much to do. One can only choose where one feels one may be most effective and do one's best. Below your message I have pasted the information regarding the John Pitner defense fund, should any reconsider mailing a few dollars to assist John. Then Bank tells me that they send receipts for the donations that are sent directly to them, so I have not mailed receipts for those. I would like to thank those people who entrusted $100 cash and $50 cash to the U.S.Postal Service - anonymously. The money did go into John's fund. As it stands, we have a little over half of the amount needed for the down payment for Luis to start on the habeas corpus. In other words, we need $2,500 total for the h.c. with $1,250 to be paid up front, and we have $782 in the fund at the moment. Wouldn't it be nice if we could collect enough to get John out of there for Thanksgiving? Especially since Dick (his daddy) is fighting cancer. Again, details on this gross miscarriage of justice can be found at http://www.involved.com/ewolfe/caged The address of the Bank if you wish to send a donation is: Regions Bank, P.O. Box 2157, Carrollton, GA 30117. Blessings and thanks, and please forward this to anyone who may want to help. Margi
