"JOHN DOE #2" TO MAKE BAIL? AND IF HE DOES, WHAT DO HIS JAILED ERSTWHILE BUDDIES IN THE ARYAN REPUBLICAN ARMY (THOSE WHO ARE STILL ALIVE) THINK OF THAT?

An FBI agent identified a Philadelphia college student yesterday as the masked gunman who stood over three prostrate bank employees during a 1995 Wisconsin bank robbery allegedly planned and executed by a group of white supremacists.

Michael William Brescia also ``terrorized'' customers by igniting a smoke bomb in the bank lobby to cover his escape with two other robbers, FBI agent Paul Hendrickson Jr. told U.S. Magistrate Peter B. Scuderi.

Despite Hendrickson's testimony about Brescia's alleged involvement in the Aug. 30, 1995 robbery of the Bank One branch in Madison, Wis., and Brescia's alleged creation of false identification documents, Scuderi rejected the prosecution request that the 24-year-old Andorra resident be held without bail pending trial.

Scuderi noted that bank surveillance video described by Hendrickson depicts robbers wearing masks. The only evidence linking Brescia to that tape, Scuderi said, was the testimony of alleged co-conspirator Kevin William McCarthy.

Scuderi added that Brescia had no prior criminal record and that his parents were willing to put their home on the line to underwrite his $200,000 bail.

JDT Commentary: "No prior criminal record" true enough. Only because the Feds have given him a pass on OKC,and, maybe, the Mueller triple murder. Other neoNazis have reportedly been more scared to death of this little "choirboy" than of Tom Metzger of White Aryan Resistance. "He's got shark eyes" one is reported to have said.

The judge also required Brescia to undergo electronic monitoring and to remain inside his parents' home except for his job at an Exton electronics firm or night classes at LaSalle University.

JDT Commentary: Now there's an ad for a trade publication-- "Got a job about to blow up in your face? Call John Doe #2, our experienced service representative, at 1-888-123-4567."

Brescia and his parents and his brother, and Brescia's fiancee who lives with him in his parents' home, were also ordered by Scuderi to surrender all firearms.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Schwartz immediately obtained a stay of the bail order and arranged for an appeal hearing before U.S. District Judge Ronald L. Buckwalter.

Brescia represented a threat to the community, Schwartz told Buckwalter, because there was no way to ensure that he might not obtain weapons and was a possible flight risk because he allegedly created false identification documents as part of the robbery conspiracy.

Schwartz also noted that Brescia recently had been in contact with two of the four men indicted with him last week, his younger brother, Matthew, and his fiancee, Esther Den Hardog.

Den Hardog is the granddaughter of the leader of Elohim City, a right-wing Christian compound in Oklahoma. She and Brescia's family declined comment.

Buckwalter ordered that Brescia remain in federal custody pending his decision today on the bail issue.

Brescia was indicted on conspiracy charges by a federal grand jury Thursday with Mark William Thomas, 47, a Berks County white supremacist leader, and three others _ Peter Kevin Langan, 38, of Columbus, Ohio; Scott Stedeford, 28, an Ardmore man who also lived in Camden; and McCarthy, 19, of the city's Bustleton section _ for plotting seven Midwest bank robberies to fund white separatist activities around the country.

The seven robberies are believed to be among at least 22 committed by white supremacists between 1992 and 1995; authorities have estimated more than $250,000 was stolen.

Thomas, long a prominent figure among white supremacists and other far right extremists in Southeastern Pennsylvania, surrendered to authorities on Thursday and is to have a bail hearing today before U.S. Magistrate Arnold C. Rapoport in Allentown.

Langan is currently on trial on bank robbery charges in federal court in Columbus, Ohio; Stedeford was convicted in November in a federal court trial in Des Moines, Iowa; and McCarthy pleaded guilty last July in Columbus and agreed to testify against the others.

McCarthy was the government's star witness against Stedeford, who now faces up to 30 years in prison. Last week McCarthy was again in court, testifying in Ohio as the chief witness against Langan.

Brescia's first attorney, Brian J. McMonagle, has said Brescia had nothing to do with the bank robberies or any other white separatist activities.

McMonagle has confirmed that Brescia lived for almost two years in Elohim City, the right-wing compound, but said he became disillusioned and returned to Philadelphia with his fiancee about four months ago.

McMonagle has theorized that the charges against him were generated by residents of Elohim City and others angry at Brescia for leaving.

McMonagle yesterday withdrew as Brescia's attorney after telling the court that Brescia could not afford his own lawyer. Buckwalter appointed lawyer Edward J. Daly in his place.

In an interview outside the courtroom, of court, FBI agent Hendrickson said in a brief interview that Brescia was expelled from Elohim City when the time bank robberies started. The leader of the Elohim City sect has also told reporters that Brescia was expelled.
