WHITE-SEPARATIST LEADER IS CHARGED IN ROBBERY PLOT AN INDICTMENT SAYS HE, WITH FOUR OTHERS, PLANNED BANK HEISTS TO FUND THE CAUSE.

A Pennsylvania white-supremacist leader and four other men were accused by a federal grand jury yesterday of plotting a string of bank robberies in the Midwest to fund white-separatist activities around the country.
The leader, Mark William Thomas, 47, recruited young people for the robberies, invited them to his Berks County farm, and plotted seven bank heists in Ohio, Missouri, Iowa and Wisconsin in 1994 and 1995, the indictment says.
The robberies - in which the gunmen sometimes dressed up as FBI agents or as Santa Claus, elves and other characters - are among at least 22 believed to have been committed by white supremacists since late 1992.
More than $250,000 was stolen in those 22 robberies, prosecutors said. Some of the money was used by Thomas and other white separatists to promote their movement and to buy guns and other equipment for future robberies, authorities said.
The proceeds paid, among other things, for a videotape titled Armed Struggle Underground, authorities said. Three of the men charged yesterday allegedly used the film to recruit members to a group called the Aryan Republican Army.
Among those indicted was Michael William Brescia, 24, of Philadelphia. Brescia, a part-time student at La Salle University and the son of a retired city firefighter, was arrested by FBI agents yesterday. He was ordered held until a bail hearing Tuesday.
Also charged were an Ardmore man, a teenager from the city's Bustleton section, and a Columbus, Ohio, man. Those three were already in federal custody on charges stemming from some of the Midwest robberies.
Thomas has long been a prominent figure among far-right groups in Southeastern Pennsylvania, regularly hosting Nazi and Aryan Nation organizing rallies and showing up at sites that have become icons to the extreme right.
Authorities say Thomas has visited the Idaho compound once frequented by Randy Weaver, the key figure in the 1992 Ruby Ridge standoff with the FBI, and has been to the right-wing Christian compound in Oklahoma known as Elohim City.
Thomas organized the seven Midwestern bank robberies from his farm in Macungie, near Allentown, U.S. Attorney Michael R. Stiles said yesterday.
``This is not a typical investigation. This is not a typical case,'' Stiles said at a news conference. ``The bank robberies took place in the Midwest ."
